The Julii Cory (Corydoras julii), also known as the Leopard Cory, is a small, peaceful armored catfish popular in the aquarium hobby for its distinctive spotted pattern and social behavior.
Identification & Appearance
- Markings: They feature a light silver or beige body covered in fine black spots and a prominent dark horizontal line along the sides.
- True vs. False Julii: Most fish sold as "Julii" are actually C. trilineatus (False Julii). True Juliis have small, isolated spots on the head, while False Juliis have a more connected, reticulated (chain-like) pattern.
- Size: They typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches (5–6.5 cm) in length.
- Unique Features: They can rotate their eyes, giving the appearance of "winking".
Aquarium Care (2026 Guidelines)
To thrive in 2026, these fish require specific habitat conditions:
- Social Needs: They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 to feel secure and display natural behaviors.
- Substrate: Must be fine sand or very smooth gravel; coarse or sharp substrate can damage their sensitive barbels.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 73°F - 79°F (23°C - 26°C).
- pH: 6.0 - 8.0.
- Hardness: 2° to 25° dH.
- Diet: Omnivorous scavengers. They require sinking foods such as high-quality pellets, algae wafers, and frozen treats like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
Behavior & Compatibility
- Temperament: Extremely peaceful and non-aggressive.
- Tank Mates: Ideal for community tanks with other peaceful species like tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids.
- Activity: Primarily nocturnal but active during the day if they feel safe. They occasionally dart to the surface to gulp air, which is normal behavior.
