Koi (or Nishikigoi) are vibrant, ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) traditionally kept for decorative purposes in outdoor ponds and water gardens. First bred by rice farmers in Niigata, Japan, during the early 19th century, they are celebrated globally for their striking colors, complex scale patterns, and deep cultural symbolism.

Key Facts About Koi Fish
  • Lifespan: They average a lifespan of 40 years, but can live much longer under optimal conditions. The oldest verified koi famously reached nearly 230 years old.
  • Size: Healthy adult koi can grow up to 3 feet (90 cm) in length, requiring large, deep ponds.
  • Diet: They are opportunistic omnivore feeders that eat algae, aquatic plants, insects, and commercial floating pellets.
  • Value: Prize-winning show fish with flawless genetics can command astronomical prices, sometimes selling for over $1 million at Japanese auctions.

Major Varieties
While there are over 100 distinct variants, breeders separate them into specific lineage classes:
  • Gosanke: The most popular group consisting of Kohaku (white with red), Taisho Sanshoku / Sanke(white with red and black), and Showa Sanshoku / Showa (black with red and white).
  • Utsurimono: A black-based variety featuring stylized white, yellow, or red patterns.
  • Asagi: Characterized by light blue, indigo-colored scales on the back and red accents on the belly.
