Medaka [Oryzias latipes), also known as the Japanese Rice Fish, is a small, exceptionally hardy freshwater fish native to East Asia. Originally found in rice paddies and marshes, it has been kept as an ornamental pet in Japan since the 17th century.
- Hardiness: They are famous for surviving in extreme conditions, including near-freezing temperatures and low-oxygen environments.
- Appearance: While wild medaka are typically silvery-brown, selective breeding has created hundreds of varieties featuring colors like vibrant orange (Yokihi), deep black (Orochi), and shimmering blue (Miyuki).
- Size: They typically grow to about 1.5 inches (4 cm).
- Behavior: They are peaceful, active schooling fish that are often friendly enough to "beg" for food at the front of a tank.
