The L471 Pleco, also known as the Mini Snowball Pleco or Dwarf Snowball Pleco, is a small, visually striking freshwater catfish from the Hypancistrus genus. It is highly prized by hobbyists for its manageable size and bold, high-contrast white spots on a black body.
Quick Profile
  • Scientific Name: Hypancistrus sp. L471.
  • Common Names: Mini Snowball Pleco, Dwarf Orinoco Angel Pleco.
  • Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela.
  • Maximum Size: Typically reaches 2.5 to 3.5 inches (6–9 cm), making it a true dwarf species.

Aquarium Care
The L471 is an intermediate-level fish that requires stable water conditions and plenty of hiding spots.
  • Tank Size: Minimum 15–20 gallons for a single specimen or a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 77°F to 84°F (25°C to 29°C).
    • pH: 5.5 to 7.5.

  • Environment: Provide numerous caves and driftwood for shelter; they are reclusive and feel most secure in dark crevices.
Diet & Behavior
Unlike many plecos that eat mainly algae, the L471 is an omnivore with a strong carnivorous preference.
  • Diet: Thrives on protein-rich foods like sinking carnivore pellets, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Supplement with occasional fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful with other species but can be territorial toward other Hypancistrus or males of its own kind.
  • Tank Mates: Ideal for community tanks with small, peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras.
