The oranda goldfish is a popular fancy goldfish known for its prominent, fleshy head growth called a "wen," which develops as the fish matures. Originating from Asia, these fish have been selectively bred for centuries to achieve their distinctive appearance. Orandas are peaceful, can be interactive with their owners, and can live for 10 to 15 years in an optimal aquarium environment.
Oranda goldfish characteristics
Appearance: Orandas have a short, round, egg-shaped body with large scales. They feature a unique double tail fin, creating a fan-like shape.
The wen: The wen, or hood, is the most defining characteristic of the oranda. It typically begins to grow when the fish is 3 to 4 months old and continues to develop until the fish is about 2 to 3 years old. In some cases, the wen can grow to cover the eyes, which may hinder the fish's ability to see and eat.
Size: As one of the larger fancy goldfish types, orandas can grow to be 8 to 12 inches long.
Colors: They come in a wide range of colors and patterns, including solid red or white, and calico, which features a mix of different shades.
Behavior: Orandas are generally calm and docile. They are omnivorous bottom-feeders that enjoy scavenging and digging.
