Freshwater Pom Pom Crab (Ptychognathus barbatus)
A relatively new addition to the freshwater aquarium scene, this species is completely unrelated to the marine version but shares a similar nickname due to the fuzzy tufts on its claws.
- Wild Habitat: They are native to coastal streams and estuaries across parts of Africa, Asia, and Australia. They are considered euryhaline, meaning they can tolerate varying levels of salinity.
- Behavior: They are fully aquatic, peaceable bottom-dwellers that spend their time picking through sand and grazing on filamentous algae or detritus.
- Escape Artists: Because of their lightweight bodies and long legs, they are incredibly agile climbers. Aquariums housing them must have a secure, tightly-fitted lid to prevent escapes
